DMLS for 3D metal printing
Metal 3D printing: DMLS technology
With DMLS you can create 3D-printed metal parts directly from a CAD model. The main feedstock is metal alloy powder. The technology is used for industrial 3D printing.
How does it work?
In the metal 3D printer, an ultra-thin layer of metal powder is spread across the build platform. A high-power laser then melts the powder exactly where the CAD model defines it, completing one layer of the 3D-printed part. The process repeats until the part is finished:
Three steps of DMLS technology
- The 3D printer keeps spreading the metal powder layer by layer.
- The laser precisely fuses the desired geometry in each layer.
- The 3D-printed part grows layer by layer.
DMLS technology for EOS metal 3D printers
What is metal additive manufacturing?
DMLS, as used by EOS metal 3D printers, follows the principle of Direct Metal Laser Sintering. It is a laser powder bed fusion process and one of the most advanced and reliable technologies worldwide for metal AM. It is used for serial production of industrial 3D-printed metal parts across many industries—with key applications in aerospace, automotive, medical, tooling, and turbomachinery.
EOS is the world’s leading supplier of industrial metal 3D printers and has used DMLS technology for almost three decades.
